September 15, 2006

At the end of August all of our long term Orange County breast cancer clients that have been receiving housing assistance from another organization were told that this assistance would end with the December rent check.

Several of these women called crying and were desperately trying to find a way to keep their housing. They are all too sick to have to worry about going to a shelter to die.

 Some of these women were homeless when we began assisting them. All of these women have been fighting to stay alive. Most have severe metastasis and will never work again. They are already receiving either SSI or Social Security Disability. Most of these women are living on less than $1,000 a month. Without our assistance and the housing allowance they were receiving, most would not be able to keep a roof over their heads.

The following is a partial list of our long term metastatic clients and their status;

  • Melissa A. age 32, 2 young children, lung metastasis, we have been assisting her since April of 2003.
  • Carita B. age 63, severe bone metastasis, was on her way to being homeless when we started assisting her in March of 2005.
  • Diane C. age 47, she has severe liver and other metastasis, she lost her job due to breast cancer and was living in a motel when we started assisting her in March of 2003.
  • Susan D. age 58, several bone metastasis, husband also disabled. We have been assisting them since December of 2005.
  • Maria D. age 51, one son age 14,  severe brain and other metastasis, we have been assisting her since Sept. 2003.
  • Laura G. age 45, severe brain metastasis, 2 young children, we have been assisting her since October of 2002.
  • Davona H. age 63, complications and infections from surgeries and treatments, husband disabled with cancer, we have been assisting them since July of 2005.
  • Vida N. age 41, severe bone metastasis, 2 young children, high medical co-pays, we have been assisting her off and on since December of 2004.
  • Angel P. age 62, severe bone and other metastasis, has filed for bankruptcy, is losing her home, we have been assisting her since March of 2003.

For all of the women listed, we provide food, utility, medical or other types of assistance. We also assist with housing, as needed. We provide Wal-Mart or Target for the children’s needs and we also assist with home health care if needed.  Eleven of our long term clients have passed away this year and three on the above list will soon be moving onto hospice.

In January, 2007 we will begin paying an additional $500 per month for housing for each of these clients.

We will also continue to assist newly diagnosed clients with their needs.
